The Story

Sobibor is based on the legendary true story of the Sobibor concentration camp revolt. This was the only successful mass breakout from a Nazi extermination camp in history. This is not a dark and gruesome WWII film but a remarkably uplifting story that exposes the endurance of the human spirit in the fight for survival. The film centres on a Soviet officer, Alexander Pechersky, who organises a mass escape from Sobibor, a prison camp in Nazi-occupied Poland. The film's main success is its incredibly detailed focus and nuance on camp life and relationships. As well as directing, Khabensky also stars as Pechersky, alongside Christopher Lambert, who plays Nazi SS officer Karl Frenzel. Khabenskiy, is one of Russia’s most respected actors well known internationally for his roles in Night Watch, Day Watch, Wanted and Admiral. The film has been praised for its historical accuracy and emotional impact playing to rapturous houses in Russia and in Cannes earlier this year. In the year of the 75th anniversary of the breakout, this multi-million-dollar Holocaust drama became an unprecedented box office success.
