This Berlinale-premiering documentary by director Klára Tasovská captures the extraordinary life of Libuše Jarcovjáková, one of the most important photographers to emerge from Europe in the 20th century. Tasovská reconstructs Jarcovjáková’s life, a life that corresponds with the rise and fall of the Soviet Union, by way of Jarcovjáková’s photographs, all of which are beautiful and striking. These black and white photographs — reminiscent of the likes of Nan Goldin and Diane Arbus — are assembled in a montage alongside Jarcovjáková’s own narration. With the photographer’s work and voice, director Tasovská offers a poetic tribute to her artistic process and an intimate, sprawling portrait of her daring existence.
I'm Not Everything I Want to Be will be preceded by the short film Cold and Dark (dir. Peter Hošták, 2024, Slovakia/ Canada, 30 mins).
