ROMAN PORNO REBOOT

The 'Roman Porno' or 'Pink Film' genre was established in Japan in the mid-1960s and dominated Japanese domestic cinema through to the mid-1980s.

The formula for a 'Pink Film' is as follows:

1. The film must have a required minimum quota of sex scenes
2. The film must be approximately one hour in duration
3. It must be filmed on 16 mm or 35 mm film within one week
4. The film must be made on a very limited budget.

The genre has been reinvigorated in recent times with titles Wet Woman in the Wind, and Antiporno.

Wet Woman in the Wind

  • Cast
  • Takahiro Katô, Yuki Mamiya, Tasuku Nagaoka
  • Director
  • Akihiko Shiota
  • Synopsis
  • A non-stop energetic sex comedy, this is part of Nikkatsu's Roman Porno Reboot project, paying homage to the softcore porn films of the 1970s and '80s.

To mark the 45th anniversary of the infamous ‘Roman Porno', Nikkatsu commissioned some of Japan's leading filmmakers to make a new set of films using similar constraints. The films had to be under 80 minutes long, have at least one sex scene every 10 minutes and be shot in under a week. Director Akihiko Shiota uses these constraints to his advantage in this vigorously-paced film.

Playwright Kosuke has forsaken the city and sex to live in a remote mountain lodge. He encounters a beautiful woman who decides there and then to seduce the reluctant Kosuke, setting off a very funny battle of the libidos. Working with, and playfully subverting the genre, Shiota has created a laugh-out-loud homage.

"A long-dormant sub-genre of cinema returns to sparky life in Akihiko Shiota's increasingly raunchy but disarmingly breezy Wet Woman in the Wind (Kaze ni nureta onna)"
    – THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER

"Love brings the house down – quite literally – in Wet Woman in the Wind, a Japanese softcore sex comedy that must surely be one of the jolliest and most pugnacious erotic films ever made… Shunsuke Kida's playfully jazzy score gives this eccentric piece additional hipster appeal"
    – SCREEN DAILY

”Shiota pinpoints the reason, then, that many of us aren’t having the sex we want: pride, which is actually fear, and it’s this understanding that indicates the film’s modernity. Walled off in our own cocoons, we aren’t willing to get our hands dirty and look foolish. For that, we pay a steep price.”
