“Who Are We” tells the story of the history of the Melbourne Jewish community through the eyes of its Australian Rules Football Club.
Ajax is where the disparate Jews from North and South of the Yarra came together to form a true community club, fostering a sense of Jewish pride and self-esteem.
But it is also about the footy. Unique in character, the Jackas have established themselves as one of the most respected clubs in Victoria, winning several premierships and developing players who would one day play in the Australian Football League (AFL).
The film explores overarching themes ranging from The Genesis of the Club in 1957 … to the Road to A Grade in 1979. From the impacts of Anti-Semitism, especially in the early days … to the temptation of footy, and how Orthodox men played for Ajax while their families / rabbis didn’t know. From being the central part of the Jewish community social scene … to the role and importance of the club in the broader Jewish community.
Seventy years on, AJAX stands as a living legacy … of football, of families, and belonging - This is Who We Are.
