As Anna’s disaffected fiancé Sandro and best friend Claudia (Monica Vitti, in her breakout role) search for her, their own attraction develops into a fickle romance deeply affected by their own guilt and the increasing futility of their search. A masterwork of mood, pacing and visual composition, Antonioni’s career-defining treatise on ennui and spiritual isolation helped to launch modern art cinema as we know it.
