Weaving together performances, archival footage, re-enactments and interviews with musical luminaries, this documentary provides a deep dive into the life of legendary Jewish composer Gustav Mahler – one of history’s great artists – and recreates his little-known Manhattan sojourn.

Fleeing Viennese anti-Semitism and navigating the heartbreak of his volatile marriage with wife Alma, Gustav Mahler finds himself on the streets of New York, thousands of miles from the land where he experienced his triumphs and living under the shadow of mounting health issues. Amidst the bustle of this pluralistic new world, he works on his final symphonies and transforms the musical landscape of the city through his leadership of the New York Philharmonic and the Metropolitan Opera.

More than just a re-appraisal of his life’s work, Mahler in New York reconsiders how Mahler’s transformative final years in his “spiritual home” impacted his legacy, and explores how his message reverberates today.
