The Story

CaSFFA has presented all Jiří Mádl’s films, and Waves—Czechia’s  submission to the 2025 Oscars—marks his most ambitious work yet. Set before and after the invasion of Czechoslovakia by Soviet Union-led Warsaw Pact troops, this gripping historical drama unfolds inside Czechoslovak Radio, where a group of journalists defy censorship to broadcast the truth.  

Drawing on the real events that ended the Prague Spring, Mádl blends emotional intimacy with sweeping historical scope, crafting a tense and resonant portrait of resistance. An epic, dynamically shot film that immerses the viewer in the realities of the time, Waves marks a major achievement for Czech cinema and offers a powerful reflection on integrity, loyalty, and the cost of standing up to power.
