On 8 September 1939, just a week after the outbreak of the Second World War, the social comedy Kristian premiered. Nearly 90 years on, it remains one of the most beloved Czech films. Its enduring popularity is anchored by Oldřich Nový in a celebrated double role as a shy travel agency clerk and his alter ego, the elegant seducer Kristian. Once a month he escapes into a luxury bar world, only to flee at the moment romantic encounters become too real. Co-starring Adina Mandlová and Nataša Gollová, and directed by Martin Frič, the film became a showcase of witty dialogue and effortless performances. Its famous SlowFox Just for Today and iconic line, “Close your eyes. I’m leaving.” drop from the lips of Czech film lovers to this day.
