Following Shira's Journey

  • Director
  • Natalie Cunningham, Carol Gordon
  • Synopsis
  • More than 60,000 Greek Jews perished in the Nazi concentration camps, and yet the experiences of Greece’s Jewish population during the Holocaust have remained relatively unknown until now. In the post-war years, fear, suspicion, economic hardship and civil war relegated the sad history of the Greek Jews to the horrors of a time people preferred to forget.

Interviews with Greek-Jewish Holocaust survivors, as well as second and third generation survivors, offer insights into these now extinct communities, and their much smaller modern-day descendants determined to keep culture and traditions alive — especially in the face of anti-Semitism.

Screening followed by Q&A with director Carol Gordon.

Trezoros: The Lost Jews of Kastoria

  • Director
  • Lawrence Russo & Larry Confino
  • Synopsis
  • “Something special... a discerning historical document about little known aspects of the war itself” — Filmfestivals.com

A coastal city renowned for its idyllic beauty, Kastoria was once home to a harmonious and vibrant population of Jews and Christians. Illuminating the individual stories of the Sephardi Jews forced from their homes, this carefully crafted documentary serves as a tribute, and reminder of, the many displaced communities afflicted by the Holocaust. Using never-before-seen archival footage and interviews with survivors scattered across the diaspora, Trezoros stitches together a compelling and affecting portrait of what was once a dynamic Jewish community.

Cloudy Sunday

  • Director
  • Manoussos Manoussakis
  • Synopsis
  • Thessaloniki, Greece, 1942. Estrea, a Jewish girl, and Giorgos, a Christian boy, fall in love against a background of German occupation. Their relationship is forbidden under the new laws put in place by the Nazis, forcing them to seek sanctuary at the historic Ouzeri Tsitsanis. The small tavern is presided over by Vasilis Tsitsanis, one of the greatest composers and singers of the 20th century, and his folk music provides some Jews relief from the unfolding chaos. Despite steadfast resistance, the hunt for Jews gradually spreads and suddenly simple choices become life changing decisions, with far more than simply love at stake.

Inspired by real events, and adapted from George Skarbadonis’s novel of the same name, Cloudy Sunday is the winner of multiple 2016 Hellenic Film Academy Awards.
