Set in the south of France, Woody Allen’s Magic in the Moonlight is an entrancing inspection of the life of a master illusionist Stanley Crawford, (Colin Firth) in the 1920s, who is tasked with exposing an alluring young clairvoyant (Emma Stone), as a fraud. This is his sideline job – he exposes frauds particularly mediums who receive communication from the spirit world. This is a very glamorous looking film that explores our belief in something more and it includes a twist that will leave you stunned. This film is a debate between rationalism and magic. Firth’s character is constantly to convince that nothing exists beyond the tangible and the real. Stanley is a skeptic in a world obsessed with illusion and he knows that realism is a limited and empty view but he is stubborn in his criticism of illusion. This film delves into the notion that magic expresses a need to believe in the supernatural and equally strong skepticism to disbelieve in it. Typically Allen extracts delightful performances from his talented cast. This is a film that will thrill the senses especially aesthetically.
“France does seem to bring out the best in Allen, who, working with much of his “Midnight” crew, has delivered one of his most beautifully made films.”
